an entrepreneurial thought of a Junior Financial Executive

Entrepreneurial - Career Path by Professor Andy Ferreria (Asian Institute of Management Professor)

I'm typing here the things that i jotted down during the Lecture of Ma. Ferreria.

(this post is for my dear Amchamate Telai from Ateneo de Davao..im really sorry dear if this post is somewhat short..)

the things that were written on my CBRE pad (CB Richard Ellis International Real Estate Services) are kinda short..

waaahhh..i mustve concentrated on eating the KFC meal and eating Patty's Birthday Cakes. hahah. :) plus..the fact that im tired. the travel to laguna was kinda exhausting. the heat is "urgh".

anywei..here it goes.

it says here that :

"TAKE A PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT".

of course! everyone must take this into consideration! why did you take up college when you're not into landing a "professional" job?..

ENTERPRISE

SEE - SELF MASTERY , ENVIRONMENTAL MASTERY, ENTERPRISE MASTERY.

SELF MASTERY:
  • IQ has nothing to do with entrepreneurs.
  • IQ is something you're born with.
True indeed.

AQ - Adversity Quotient

what is it anyway?

According to Bruce Elkin:

"Adversity Quotient (AQ)® is a global predictor of individual, team and organizational resilience and success."

"Adversity Quotient (AQ) is a scientific measure your personal and team resilience-how you habitually respond
to and deal with adversity."

it tells how long until you give up. (well for an entrepreneur..you must NOT give up! Opportunities are there. Sizzling hot!)

and if ever you fail, AQ measures how fast you stand up.

I personally havent taken this test. but im gonna take it soon.

ENVIRONMENTAL MASTERY

taking opportunities and having a total understanding of where you are :)

ENTERPRISE MASTERY

(need i say more?)

THE ART OF PASSION!

* The EQ of an Entrepreneur is very high.

* Entrepreneurs are NOT creative. THEY ARE WHOLE BRAIN. (meaning both brains are working.
.the left cerebral hemisphere is supposed the coldly logical, verbal and dominant half of the brain plus the right developed a reputation as the imaginative side, emotional, spatially aware but suppressed. ) TWO PERSONALITIES IN ONE HEAD.

TOPPING IT ALL..THERE'S STILL AN OBLIGATION!

an entrepreneur should take into consideration the "risks".

yes. the "risks". the uncertainty that the business may seem to be booming right at this moment but may be falling to pieces the next day.

no business isnt really that perfectly made to meet expectations

(let's keep it real.)

How to do this?

Step 1: Describe your life upon retirement?

most people dont take this into consideration. literally meaning.. the expenses involved when you retire. its not like you're thinking of "death". its learning the TIME VALUE OF MONEY.

this i have learned from my Financial Management class. fluctuations of prices is EXPECTED.

a commodity is one good thing. we are all aware of it! INFLATION rules our economy.

Step 2: Inflate it!

how again? take note of its FUTURE VALUE.

so i think this post is kinda lame.

but i tried :)

ahihi..

i hope i helped telai in a way :)

CITI : Our first stop. :)

CITI.

Our first stop.

So our first stop was at Citi. Just a few blocks away from amcham office.

it was also our first ride in our shuttle! yey.

we met kuya sammy. the ever kind driver.

i was amused of the building's structure. yes. and we went directly to the 37th floor because we were so late. we enjoyed the talk from Mr. Stolk at the amcham hall and forgot about the time.

anyhow, the room we entered was so cozy. we were like inside some fine restaurant because of the dining setup.
our speaker was Mr. Dennis Choa, the Country Treasurer.

Citi is about 106 years of existence. imagine that. its sooo old. way older than my great grandparents.

i have learned that what's important to Citi are: Excellence in Execution and Quality Of Service.

and based from the Voice of the Customer Survey: HIGH SATISFACTION.

meaning, the customers surely are happy with the service that Citi offers them.

another thing that got stuck in my mind was some quotes that Mr. Choa included in his presentation.

"ITS NOT WHO YOU KNOW, ITS WHAT THEY KNOW!"

by Mr.Gokongwei.

TREASURY
- "A Trader's World is a Trader's Bond"

i really learned a lot about Mr. Choa's speech or lecture. aside from being a Finance and Treasury Management major, i should also be aware of what's happening in the corporate world. especially the financial institutions.

Based from the notes i jotted down..here are some:

YOU CAN GET A CAREER IN FICC (Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities) IF YOU HAVE:
  • energy and passion
  • communication skills
  • numerical skills and brilliance
  • ability to work well with a team
  • INTEGRITY
i highlighted the last part. INTEGRITY it is.

in my society, the Junior Financial Executives- PLM Chapter, our professor instills in us the value of integrity.

INTEGRITY
(according to Wikipedia)

"
Integrity can be seen as a virtue in that accountability and moral responsibility are often indicated as necessary tools for maintaining consistency between one's actions and one's principles, methods and measures, especially when an expected result is incongruent with observed outcome."

integrity should not be only in our deisred profession but also in personal life.

in less than a year ill be graduating.

im gonna be in the CORPORATE WORLD.

THE REAL WORLD.

i wish to see that my big boss will the first model of integrity that i can look up to.

all in all.

i enjoyed the talk that Mr. Choa has spent with us.

during our lunch, we had chicken. and we dined together with other big bosses from Citiback (im sorry i really forgot their names.)

we had some chit chat with them and i was surprised how happy they were to meet us.

though the time we spent with them was about an hour, it seemed like we,ve known them for long. they were like talking about stuff regarding Citi and how well their company stands.

i enjoyed the tour at Citi although it isnt actually a tour.

but on a brighter side, im glad ive met people who values integrity.

my amcham screenings. :)

MY AMCHAM BOP HISTORY.

i am Rachel Marice B. Nava
a 4th yr student from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
taking up BSBA - Major in Finance and Treasury Management

let me start it this way.

it was early january when i learned about amcham bop. my classmates were like so fussed about it. and almost everyone would like to be a part of it.

midterm examinations ended and my professor gave me some application forms to accomplish.
telling me it was for the amcham BOP. so i accomplished it as soon as possible.

days passed with no reply. ive been checking my email everyday and still havent received any confirmation. it was march 6, 2008 when i received an email telling me that i passed the initial screening and that i'm bound to take an exam at john clements. yey! i was so excited about it. my classmate mark & i both passed the first screening.

i went to john clements at makati with my dad to take my exam. i was really nervous about it. jitters were all over my body. it subsided eventually after i reached the examination room. so i took some "IQ" tests, personality test, and finally..an oral proficiency exam. gawd! i was interviewed an im not really expecting such. but it went on well. the guy who interviewed me was fun to talk to. we were like talking stuffs about my family and all.

so after that interview, i went home right away. and yes! i was the first one to finish the interview and exams. i needed to rush off because i have other appointments on the said day.

okay. so i waited again. days passed. and i got a call from Ms. Abbie telling me that i passed the 2nd screening. and now,the sudden death part will begin. a deadly interview. waaaaahhh..

so there i was. a bit excited for the interview because i really never expected to get this far. i went to amcham office with my brother. he waited outside while i was inside the amcham office.

i sat there together with other students who were waiting for their turn to be interviewed. i was first interviewed by Mr. Richard Umali, the Senior Research Consultant of AmCham Investment Climate Inmprovement Project. The interview with him was fun. I was happy that Mr. Umali gave me some words of wisdom that i should be confident of myself. and that i should instill integrity in whatever i do.

the second interview was with Ms. Eileen Lim, the HR Director of Goodyear Philippines. yes. i admit i really felt nervous when she interviewed me. but she told me to relax and that be myself. she asked me a few questions while she jots down some comments.

when the interview was done, i was relieved. but also, i felt disappointed of myself. i know i totally blew off my inteview. *sigh* but that's me.

okay. so days passed again. (gawd..there are so many days..) and i waited.

waited and waited..

i was starting to lose hope of my amcham results. but it was the day after my birthday when i received a call. FROM MISS ABBIE! :)

yey. and guess what?

im in! :)

i was really so happy about it.

the emo virus...

i never expected from myself that i would become so attached and would miss so much people who just came into my life. i thought it was all about becoming the best, being competitive, future careers. yes, i considered it to broaden my network but it never dawned on me how much i'd treasure these new people.

everyday since that night of temporary farewell, my cellphone hasn't stopped beeping with messages coming from such people."how are you", "see you soon", "i miss you".

simple phrases that express our emotions. but these are mere words and they don't give justice on how we really feel. i thought i was the only one, but to my surprise, everyone else felt the same.

one day won't go by without someone saying i miss you. and just today, i read someone's blog entry how much he misses everyone. hence, it's called the "emo virus". i guess we all got infected, one way or another.

i have to admit that i still have a hangover from what happened that week. as i've said, i thought it was pure business and learning of stuff. i never thought i'd come to being so attached, not to mention loving 24 different people.network building was an understatement. i went there and gained more than 24 dear friends.

here's something to give you an idea how much i've been infected of THE virus:
- i miss walking from the amcham hall to the ayala bus station. (or even riding the jeep.)
- lss of the week: ken lee. (this is serious.)
- i've been praying to make a mistake just so i can say I'M SO SORRY out loud.
- two words: unli coffee!!!

- the need to greet more than 20 people 'good morning' everyay.
- i miss carrying around an extra bag and looking like a sales promo girl. (the bop bag or the yellow amcham bag which contains all the freebies we got.)

- smiling everytime kuya roy's around. (actually, i always wore a smile whenever i'm with you people.)
- THE back bus will always be noisy, no matter who sits there.

- jump shots are the best!!!!!
- and if you want to be seen in the jump shots, stay in front. (based on experience. haha.)
- ms. abbie and her "guys, 5 mins na lang" line. (guys alam nyo ba, my friends noticed how fast i eat nowadays.)

- chicken meals. fried, roasted, on sandwiches, spicy, on arroz caldo... basta chicken! :p
- long talks which involve a lot of questions.
- feeling "fresherrr" everytime there's an elevator ride. and the elevator shots.
- the amcham hall is now my idea of a classroom conducive for learning.

- i think i'll be cheng's "bday girl" forever. hahaha. hanggang ngayon yata, yun parin tawag nya sakin.
- GERSWANE. :) aw.. i miss my busmate.
- i learned about safety... in the plant! :) indeed.
- MILLIONS!!
- BPO people have social lives too. diba fourth?
- lamoiyan corp. <--sasakalin ko ang makakalimot dito. :p
- when the photographer says "wacky pose", you don't move and just pose like a korean.
- mrs. murray!!!!
- i'm having a hard time not to ask people for their calling cards. haha.
- i've been wanting to drop by mr. dave's office. (as in ang lapit lang nya sa office namin.)
- .....and there's a lot more evidence of my infection but right now, i have to stop. haha. nahahabaan na ako sa list. :p

to any BOP batch 6 reading this, i miss you. very much. i do hope our baguio thing will push through. pati na rin yung cebu thing.

p.s. forgive me for the incoherent rambling. i'm just writing things at the speed of thought and even if you have no idea what i just wrote, i know you miss batch 6.i'm looking forward to celebrating my next birthday with you again.

The Cocktails

Behind the best...

More than 20 outstanding college students from all over the country recently had a rare opportunity to learn from the leaders of some of American top corporations in the Philippines, by participating in the 2008 Business Orientation Program (BOP) of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.

Aptly themed ‘The Best Meets the Best,’ “the program allowed the country’s future leaders to interact and gain knowledge from the most prominent executive leaders today. Launched in 2003, BOP aims to provide well-qualified students with a new understanding of key global business and economic issues, through a program of site tours plus in-depth discussions with management professionals from a wide spectrum of leading American multinational companies in Manila,” said Mr. Rob Sears, Executive Director of AmCham.

“With this program, we aim to promote a venue for the constructive competitive exchange of ideas among aspiring young leaders from various universities across the country,” said Mr. Sears. “In addition, we at AmCham seek to make tomorrow’s leaders aware of the contributions of American multinational businesses to the country’s development.”

This year’s participants, each chosen through a competitive application process, are made up of a select group of college students from prominent universities in the country, including University of the Philippines (Diliman, Baguio, Cebu and Davao), De La Salle University, University of the East, University of Asia and the Pacific, Far Eastern University, Centro Escolar University, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, St. Louis University in Baguio, Holy Angels University in Pampanga, Ateneo Davao, and Siliman University.

To help these students enhance mutual understanding, cooperation, and communication skills, especially with AmCham member companies, participants were exposed to the real world operations of multinational companies through site visits and meetings with top company officers. Among the companies that were visited this year include CitiBank, Chevron, Wachovia, Bellevue Hotel, Goodyear Philippines, Ogilvy & Mather Phils., International SOS, SunPower Philippines, Ford Philippines, Philam, Philip Morris, Convergys and the US Embassy – Commercial Services.

Key individuals from AmCham member firms and partner organizations discussed various topics with the students, ranging from current issues, such as the state of the Philippine economy, viewed from a multinational business perspective, to practical concerns, such as entrepreneurship and how job search works in the real world.

To harness the students’ analytical and problem-solving skills in the context of real-life business environment, participants were asked to apply their knowledge and work together on a project, such as a marketing plan, at the end of the company visits.

They were divided into teams, composed of students from different schools, to present their output to a prestigious panel of judges. The three best projects and a best presenter were recognized in a ceremony during the closing awards dinner.

In addition, students also had an opportunity to interact with the alumni of the BOP and other AmCham members, creating excellent opportunities for them to network with one another as well as with guests from AmCham member firms.

“These students are extremely motivated, with some giving up their summer break to participate in this program. We also extend our gratitude to the corporations for spending valuable time and effort to this program,” said BOP Committee Chairman David Joseph Morin, who is also Goodyear Philippines President and Managing Director.

According to Morin, “the program underscores AmCham’s commitment to promote experiential learning, which gets students out of the classroom and into real-world business settings and competitions, where theory and practice come together in rich and meaningful ways”.
“You can look at a company from afar and do a lot speculating about what might be going on within the organization. BOP puts a human face on corporate leadership and gives our students a seat at the table of some of the country’s most interesting corporations,” Mr. Morin added.
